While standards have been set on the toxic compound PFAS in New Jersey, a similarly toxic compound 1,4-Dioxane has no regulation. 1,4-Dioxane has often been found in cosmetics, shampoos, and other popular household products. The compound itself may cause vertigo; irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat; and, in high concentrations, liver damage or possibly death. Research has also classified it as a likely human carcinogen. The NJDEP began talks of regulating the compound in 2021 but discussion has since slowed down. In 2023, NY passed a bill regulating the compound in household products to 1000 ppb, and we believe New Jersey should follow suit.
Now, the bill has been introduced into the New Jersey Legislature. Now, we are gathering community support for the bill to pass via a petition.
As 2024 has closed out, it is an exciting time to reflect on all the things that we have accomplished and all the things we hope to do in the next year!
